Helpers compensate for age‐related declines in parental care and offspring survival in a cooperatively breeding bird

چکیده
Offspring from elderly parents often have lower survival due to parental senescence. In cooperatively breeding species, where offspring care is shared between breeders and helpers, the alloparental provided by helpers predicted mitigate impact of senescence on provisioning and, subsequently, survival. We test this prediction using data a long-term study Seychelles warblers (Acrocephalus sechellensis). find that nestling rate female declines with their age. Further, total brood first-year probability decline progressively age breeder, but these are mitigated when present. This effect does not arise because individual provide more in response older dominant females, recruited thereby receiving overall for brood. do such effects male breeders. These results indicate can alleviate fitness costs breeders, which suggests an interplay cooperative breeding.

Antagonistic effect of helpers on breeding male and female survival in a cooperatively breeding bird
1. Cooperatively breeding species are typically long lived and hence, according to theory, are expected to maximize their lifetime reproductive success through maximizing survival. Under these circumstances, the presence of helpers could be used to lighten the effort of current reproduction for parents to achieve higher survival. 2. In addition, individuals of different sexes and ages may follo...
متن کاملKinship affects investment by helpers in a cooperatively breeding bird.
Helping behaviour in cooperative breeding systems has been attributed to kin selection, but the relative roles of direct and indirect fitness benefits in the evolution of such systems remain a matter of debate. In theory, helpers could maximize the indirect fitness benefits of cooperation by investing more in broods with whom they are more closely related, but there is little evidence for such ...
متن کاملSocial genetic and social environment effects on parental and helper care in a cooperatively breeding bird
Phenotypes expressed in a social context are not only a function of the individual, but can also be shaped by the phenotypes of social partners. These social effects may play a major role in the evolution of cooperative breeding if social partners differ in the quality of care they provide and if individual carers adjust their effort in relation to that of other carers. When applying social eff...
متن کاملHelpers benefit offspring in both the short and long-term in the cooperatively breeding banded mongoose.
Helpers in cooperative and communal breeding species are thought to accrue fitness benefits through improving the condition and survival of the offspring that they care for, yet few studies have shown conclusively that helpers benefit the offspring they rear. Using a novel approach to control for potentially confounding group-specific variables, I compare banded mongoose (Mungos mungo) offsprin...
متن کاملAdult helpers increase the recruitment of closely related offspring in the cooperatively breeding rifleman
Indirect fitness benefits gained through kin-selected helping are widely invoked to explain the evolution of cooperative breeding behavior in birds. However, the impact of helpers on productivity of helped broods can be difficult to determine if the effects are confounded by territory quality or if the benefit of helpers is apparent only in the long term. In riflemen Acanthisitta chloris, helpi...
